Description
In relation to the International Maritime Organisation’s SOLAS container weight verification regulation due to come into force 1st July, it will soon be mandatory and a legal requirement that all containers for shipping are weighed correctly. There are no exceptions to this requirement. This regulation will affect all companies involved in the shipping of containers via marine shipping, as it stipulates that all shippers/freight forwarders are responsible for the provision of a verified weight (however, this can be contracted out and the weight determined by a terminal – if that terminal is going to provide a service like DP World). Failure to provide a verified weight for loading aboard a vessel will be disruptive and costly to operations, with the potential of non-compliant containers being turned away from terminals, causing disruption to both the shipper and the carrier. Strainstall is an expert in load measurement and has been heavily involved in developing solutions for container weight verification. We support container terminals with full systems that don’t interrupt the lifting cycle of the terminal, including DP World Southampton, to enable them to provide a weighing service to their customers. Strainstall has now developed a solution for shippers/freight forwarders themselves with no access to a terminal container weighing service. Our portable solutions means shippers can comply with the regulations and determine a verified weight and provide this to a vessel for its stowage plan.
